100% nuclear energy supplier launches in Denmark
Kärnfull Energi, Sweden’s first nuclear-only electricity supplier – with Steven Pinker, José González and Kirsty Gogan amongst its advisors – goes international. Enjoying a tailwind of rapid organic growth in the home market, the clean energy start-up now moves ahead with its first new market entry aiming to provide Swedish nuclear energy to Danish households and SME’s in early 2021.
Starting today, Danes are welcome to join the sign-up phase and express interest in electrifying their lives using nothing but the best energy source available, in terms of environment, wild-life, people and climate – i.e. nuclear power from Sweden. The launch comes in the wake of an improved global awareness of what atomic energy means for a future desperately looking for huge amounts of clean and planable electricity. Nuclear is ideal thanks to its minimal emissions of particles and greenhouses gases (2,5g CO2/kWh), reliable output, grid stabilising services, longevity, limited land usage and superior fuel density.
Denmark has recently enjoyed a notable change in public perception on the topic, waving good bye the dogmatic thinking that e.g. forced Sweden to shut down Barsebäck power plant many decades too early. Instead, environmental and science-focused organisations are now putting the spotlight on exactly how emissions-heavy the Danish electricity grid really is on a yearly basis, due to the lack of nuclear energy. During weeks of low winds the country is heavily dependant on domestic and imported fossil electricity produced from coal and gas.
A plethora of energy start-ups, ranging from real-time emissions monitoring to small, modular reactors are headquartered in Copenhagen, and Kärnfull’s launch is carried out in cooperation with one the more prominent organisations addressing the issue – Föreningen Atomkraft Ja Tak (ForAtom)
“Denmark, like Sweden, belongs to the Nordic electricity exchange Nord Pool, making it quite easy for us to enter the market and ensuring delivery using Guarantees of origin (GOOs). Considering the close proximity to Ringhals, we’ll deliver our affordable, science-supporting and customer-centric tariffs certified with GOOs from there”, says Christian Sjölander, co-founder of Kärnfull Energi. “We are thrilled to help Kärnfull establish a great presence here in Denmark too, knowing that we’ve got a large community of rational environmentalists ready to chose 100% nuclear. The Swedish success story has every chance to repeat itself here”, says Theis Palm, founder of ForAtom.
Ever since its August 2019 launch, Göteborg-based Kärnfull Energi has proven to be a real pioneer and challenger on the Swedish electricity market, courtesy of a very strong word-of-mouth driven organic growth. Its unique niche, renowned advisors, tech innovation, science contribution programme, great customer support and competitively priced hourly-rate tariff means the company has become a voice to be reckoned within the Swedish debate. Furthermore, Kärnfull’s social media channels and blog acts as a news outlet and energy report analysts service, contextualising the energy challenge from an environmentally-friendly, cost-optimal and tech-neutral perspective.
Sweden’s electricity grid has been a role model for decades with its low emissions, competitive prices and high stability, courtesy of plentiful hydro in the north and nuclear energy in the south. However, this situation has changed following a string of politically-induced closures putting the country’s entire energy transition away from fossil fuels at bay.
“In parallel to clean and planable electricity disappearing from our outlets, usage is expected to increase by 60% until 2040. Insufficient transmission and too much weather-dependant production has put Sweden on the wrong trajectory at the worst possible time. Nuclear is popular in Sweden, but before us there was no easy way for Swedes to actively choose the energy source all leading scientist view as a key to a sustainable future”, says Sjölander. “By setting up shop in Denmark, we’re able to further put nuclear’s rising popularity in the Nordics on display. It’s thrilling to approach a brand new market with our signature level of passion and enthusiasm – and in close co-op with ForAtom”.
The Danish website was launched today, and granted that the reception during sign-up is as good as it was in Sweden – where close to 3,000 households signed up during the first week alone – Kärnfull will begin delivery of nuclear energy, at great prices and terms, as soon as possible.
The company’s popular science donation is generated based on sales – a sum of money is set aside per kilowatt hour delivered – and is supervised by Kärnfull’s pro-bono advisory board, featuring author and Harvard professor Steven Pinker, musician José González, climate expert Kirsty Gogan, hit music producer Johan Carlsson, entrepreneurs Eric Ingersoll and Caroline Cochran as well as professor Christian Ekberg och Klara Insulander Björk of Chalmers University. Well-known people, leveraging their respective expertises and platforms to raise awareness and provide strategic advise.
About Kärnfull Energi
Kärnfull Energi is part of Kärnfull Future AB, a wholly-owned company by founders Christian Sjölander and John Ahlberg. Kärnfull is a Swedish electricity supplier, and hence not an electricity producer or grid owner The start-up, on top of proving market demand and street popularity whilst supporting science via electricity sales, aims to help households “vote-with-their-wallets" and improve dinner conversations everywhere by making nuclear – and its key role in an electrified future – more well-known and understandable.
